After discussing with someone in the comments. I believe most Germans are more of indifferent to the sentence (rather than think it's fair). The life of a 93 year old man in Germany in prison would not be much different in an old age home. There's not really a difference between his current sentence and giving him 100 years. The most important part is still the acknowledgment of the crime and that we must not repeat it.

My wife gave birth to our first child on a Saturday back in March. Our school system shut down the following Monday. I taught my classes from home for the rest of the year and have since been on summer break. 6 uninterrupted months of time with my son. If they told me I had to go into a COVID disaster waiting to happen like what’s going on in this photo... maybe I’d try to sue, but I would 100% quit. No amount of money is worth endangering my son, and there will (mark my words) be a MASSIVE teacher shortage because of this complete buffoonery.
