By the time Korra goes to learn her hardest element (air), she is still childish after having blown through the other elements easily, and her only motivation for having to learn air bending seems to be something like getting the credit she needs for her diploma.

I’m not sure what it’s like where you are, but here in the Great White North, there is a lot of solidarity between the Black and Indigenous rights movements. Black Lives Matter and Idle No More have collaborated before and their messaging often includes each other’s concerns. Often both groups work together with Pride movements as well. Personally I think shaming her over her age was perfectly valid for this exact reason. She needing shaming over it because it was part of the reason it was so problematic. There's a power imbalance that comes with age, if it had been mom's co-worker who was of similar age to him he'd have probably felt more comfortable saying no himself.
