According to my right-leaning friends, all the protestors in Portland are anarchists trying to destroy America. They see this as Trump taking control of the situation. They are cheering him on, especially with his intentions of sending more troops to other large Democrat-run cities. They are chomping at the bit for ways to "eradicate" any Democrats, liberals, or left-leaning thinkers. Granted this is my anecdotal experience, but it's churning my ultra-conservative friends and relatives into a frenzy and causing them to double down on their rhetoric for finding ways to discredit anyone who thinks differently from them. One thing that gives me a lot of hope is learning about the Russian revolution/ Some of the French Revolutions. If they could educate the masses back then, before the internet or the Television, then surely we can accomplish the same goals they sought. The problem is getting those truck drivers, warehouse workers, fast food workers, etc who are most affected by automation replacement the necessary skills and training they need to acquire the technical skills to find new jobs. For some people this will just not be feasible due to age, cost of schooling/training, or to be perfectly honest lack of capacity to learn those skills. Yes - I'm focusing on a single industry but outsourcing to foreign countries isn't what I would worry about. Automation will be a bigger issue for other industries and job markets for sure. The software industry moved offshore from the US to outsourcing in India back in the late 90s and early 2000s after the bubble burst. Suddenly everyone was being told a degree in Computer Science or otherwise pursuing a career writing code was a dead-end job. Not that it's a bad thing, I have to return to the office in late June and I wish I could remain work from home. But companies are going to realize at some point, as the economic doesn't bounce back quickly, that these employees who can "work remotely" could also "work remotely" from India. Or Thailand. This will be for sure worse than the one in 08, I expect it to be near the level of the great depression to be honest. A lot of jobs flat out are not going to come back because a lot of companies have restructured and eliminated a lot of redundant jobs. It's weird to realize just how true it is that the rich get richer. I'm on the lower side of "upper middle class" and outside of health concerns and emotional impacts of isolation, I'm benefitting from COVID-19 simply by existing. My job security has gone up, my discretionary spending has gone down, my mortgage can be refinanced to save like $50k over the life of the loan, and it's a great time to invest.
